On the Water Again

This is Coles Bay, about 50 miles south of Scamander on the Sunshine Coast. It's on the Freycinet Peninsula, just on the edge of the National Park that includes the famous Wineglass Bay, said to be one of the most beautiful beaches in the world. We walked there the last time we were in Tasmania two years ago, but this time we wanted to paddle. We hired a double kayak for the day from Freycinet Adventures and explored a bit. There are plenty of other beautiful beaches in the area, most of them deserted like this one. We were staying just down the coast at Swansea Backpackers - a very modern and fairly luxurious hostel with a pub and restaurant attached. There are also several wineries in the area plus a large walnut plantation.

The next day, Wednesday, we went over to Campbell Town and up the Midland Highway to Launceston. On the way we detoured into the forest to look for the Lost Falls viewpoint. They were certainly lost - there was no water at all! This whole area has been suffering badly from drought for years, and in the farming areas the fields are brown and dusty. We're off to the west coast this weekend and the Tarkine Wilderness.

Hi Norma and Tom and Happy New Year from sunny (ha ha) Sale in Cheshire! Your trip looks fab and we've really been enjoying the photos. I'm hoping to return to South Africa too, Norma, when Laura, our Head, and I go to Capetown and then to Durban at the beginning of June to visit our 'twin' schools over there. Any advice on what to see? Someone said it's best to book up for Robben Island before leaving the UK. Is this right and what's the best way to do it? Can you recommend any other trips in the area? Hope you continue to have fun - we'll be watching with great interest! Love, Freda x

Hi T & N - still looking good! I'm enjoying the texts and photos - well done you guys! Hope the big adventure just gets better and better for you both. It's great to be able to keep up with where you are and what you're doing. William looks like he's having a great time too!! Wave rock looked interesting - amazing in fact. We are getting close to Up-Hella-Aa - great excitement???? Will it snow, rain, blow a gale? Lovely clear frosty weather at the moment though. To-day has been specially nice - my walk round Brindister loch with the dog was a real pleasure - temp a bit different from where you are though. Best wishes for next stage! Keep up the good work.
love, Liz
